After a long night of delicious and welcome sleep we joined our host , Daniela , across the hall for coffee and home made rhubarb kuchen. Yummy! She and husband Emre are amazing. Both work for software companies. They are young and energetic and very socially conscious especially ecologically. they are vegan but will direct others to restaurants where they can find the meat of their choice.
They have a garden on their balcony and they try to find original vegetable seeds meaning not just not genetically modified, but also not contaminated by herbicides and pesticides. They recycle, reuse, share, give away. Their electricity shuts off at midnight. They do not own a car but ride their bikes most everywhere and when necessary participate in a car share program. So it is not at all surprising that they participate in couchsurfing.org which is how we connected with them. Members open their homes to other members .
So on to our day. Norbert had a bunch of old deutsche marks , which were Germany's pre Euro currency. He was able to take them to a Federal Bank to exchange them for Euro's.

We are not typical tourists. We would rather simply live in a country and meet people in their everyday lives and observe and talk as much as possible. So we headed to Marienplatz again and again marveling at the quiet of the U bahn (subway).
Some pictures from Marienplatz. I love the scenes on the buildings -
The woman in white of yesterday was replaced by this man in green today.
We decided to visit Peterskirche and its tower with a great view reached only by 306 steps (no elevator!) and what goes up must come down! That's 612 stairs.
But before climbing we decided to first enter the church. Built in 1180 it has a fascinating history and a collage of architectural styles. It is the oldest Catholic Church in the area and actually gave Munich it's name as Munich is derived from the word for monk. Here you will find no altar facing the people. The pulpit is in the middle of he church, perhaps an accommodation to the lack of amplification. The military influence is heavy. It seems every statue is adorned with a weapon.

All warriors of some sort
This one puzzled me. More contemporary with a Native American feel.
Now for the stair climb!
