Leaving Munich

It was very hard to say goodbye to Daniele and Emre after just 4 days with them - sharing their gracious hospitality.  I forget if I mentioned in these ramblings that Emre is Turkish and since we were in Turkey last Fall it was wonderful to have further insights but it also really made me want to go back!!

Since today is part of the Pentecost holiday and buses and U Bahns were less frequent, they walked us to the U Bahn and helped us with the ticket machine which was in German.  We had been using a multi day ticket which expired Sunday or I guess early Monday morning.

They were the most gracious hosts.   We will miss them.

Due to the holiday the downtown Avis office was only open an hour.   We got there in time and got our car but then spent an hour trying to read the German manuals on how to operate everything.  Finally we were on the Autobahn headed north.

the Autobahn is famous for its speed limits.  120 KL which is 80 MPH.   Norbert is a safe driver and stayed in the right lane as most drivers seem to take the 120 as a starting point and pass in a blur.

The day has been sunny and beautiful.   We passed mostly very green fields, MANY solar panel installations that covered entire fields.  MANY windmills.   Germany is so far ahead of us in alternative energy.

We are spending the night in the small town of  Selbitz.   It is a quaint little typical German town with narrow streets and some Gasthaus's.   We found a wonderful restaurant serving organic mostly locally grown food from scratch.   When we arrived they were closing but they welcomed us and prepared a wonderful meal of venison ,   something similar to dumplings but with delicious unknown ingredients,  red cabbage,  a pear with cranberries.   After being frugal in Munich following the steep prices, we feel we can now feast more often and this was soooo good.

So now I settle in for a quiet evening of reading and relaxing.  Tomorrow we drive to Goslar, Norbert's home town.  Where we will stay with another new friend and his son for 4 days.   We LOVE couchsurfing.com  We are meeting people we never would have met in the US, in Iceland, and now in Germany.
