Munich Airport

I love how you can see the map of what you are passing over - Dublin,   Brussels, Paris.....Munich.   Changed money.  Bought S Bahn tickets and had a scenic and vry smooth 40 minute ride in from the airport.

SUBWAY HONOR SYSTEM!
S Bahn, Buses, etc - Bostonians and New Yorkers.  You have got to read this~ The entire bus and subway system is on an honor system.  You buy your ticket for 1 - 5 districts and 1 - 3 days and there are other options.  After buying it you do not pass through any turnstile or show it to anyone.  If you get caught without a valid ticket there are penalties but we saw no one checking.

From the plane and during the  ride in from the airport we saw field after field of bright yellow.   It turned out to be the plants that produce rape seed oil.

The trains run very quietly and smoothly.  What a treat.

Our host:

Daniela and her husband Emre have opened their home to us - actually a studio apartment they own across the hall from them right in the heart of Munich.  Since we arrived at 3 am Cambridge time (9 am here in Munich)  I immediately took a nap.

After that we took a  walk and UBahn ride to Marionplatz - a large center of activity in Munich.  It was very crowded.  The old mixes with the new.

This is the old (new)  town hall built in 1867.

Part of the crowd in Marion Platz.

Here in Bavaria there is a strong Catholic Presence and Pentecost is celebrated both Sunday and Monday as official holidays,

The very white woman in the following picture reminds e of the person who did a similar act in Harvard Square except that this woman moves .  If you go near her she will go into some kind of post with her arm around you or whatever.

Bikes are welcome and main streets have bike paths unseparate from the pedestrian  path.  I nearly was run down a couple of times before I realized I was in the wrong place.

Just for fun - they are everywhere!!

Finally we took the S Bahn out to the  end of the line where yu can see the snow covered Bavarian Alps.
