The weather forecast was again for rain today. We have been SO lucky that rain has yet to spoil our plans. We decided to take the train up the Brocken in spite of the bad forecast and were very glad we did. It was about an hour away from Goslar in what was part of East Germany.
Once we arrived at the parking area we learned that we were still a kilometer away from the train station which was accessed by an einbahnstrasse (read last post for translation if needed :)
On the way back we stopped for HOT coffee and something delicious at a bakery along the way
End of another full day!
Leaving Goslar - I will never tire of these wonderful old streets with their cobbled stone roads and narrow sidewalks
Most of the drive was through the forest
Once we arrived at the parking area we learned that we were still a kilometer away from the train station which was accessed by an einbahnstrasse (read last post for translation if needed :)
So up we walked
And up some more....
A short cut at the top. This path brings us to the station.
In the station - what the train engineer drives with
The Brocken is the highest point in the Harz Mountains
We took the train from Schierke to the top - about 14 K Many people of all ages were walking the paths up. And I complain about the 1 K from the car!
Train polluting it's way into the station.
View from the train
Some of the walkers -the walking poles like ski poles are common
Lots of bikers too -the least distance to "civilization from here is 14K!
View from the train
Arriving at the top - And it was COLD!
Communications tower built during the Cold War
Engine separates and goes to the back of the train and pulls it down backward.
1142 meters high - temp 8 degrees c and windy
View made it worth it
It started to snow before we left but didn't get a good pix of it. Too busy keeping warm
Welcome arrival of our train back down
oops - forgot about the kilometer back t the car.
Made it in 10 min. - not bad for 75 though here walking distances at my age seems common
On the way back we stopped for HOT coffee and something delicious at a bakery along the way
You never know what he next corner will bring
Our hosts - Alexander and his son, Fin
In Goslar - I keep finding these gems
Too bad this store is closed. Looks like a fun place to find hidden treasure
