On to Koblenz where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers meet

We said goodbye to our host in Goslar and took to the autobahn for our next adventure in Koblenz.  The autobahn is the road of last resort but since we had some distance to cover we took it most of the way.  More crazy drivers and lots of construction but we arrived in Koblenz about 3 as planned and found the home of our next couch surfing family.  Sabina and Paul have 4 children.  One is away in college and we have his room.

We were met on arrival by Paul, and Finn their golden retriever.  Sabina is bubbly and full of life.  We had good conversation around the table.  She told us there is an event at the old fortress - some kind of garden show she is interested in.   We decided she and her daughter would go to the show on their bikes and we would would walk to the area with Paul.

Koblenz lies on both sides of the Rhine.  The people we are staying with live on the side across from the center.which is HIGH in a hill among many hills.

Walking to the old fortress - going, walking around and returning was a walk of about 3 hours.  Not bad for an old lady :)   We think we walked between 4 - 5 miles.

After walking through town we arrived at the site of the old fortress and the Garden show. which we did not attend.
There is a large contingent of goats apparently kept to keep the vegetation down

This is the ramp/walkway to the lookout from which the above pictures were taken

Where the Rhine and Moselle meet called Deutches  Eck

A bit of the inside of the fortress

There is a cable car that connects our side of the Rhine with the center of town.  Our host rides it to work each day as do many.  Koblenz has recently been designated a UN Heritage site but this means they have to maintain a certain image.  The cable car would have to go and the town people do not want that as they can bike to it and then it carries them to the center of Koblenz
Each car holds 35 people

We returned "home" a different way.

Pictures of the garden where we are staying and the back of the house with pets.

After a wonderful German dinner with our hosts,  Norbert, Paul, and two of their children went to a friend's home to watch a huge game here.  It is the Champion League soccer final and for the first time in this European tradition, 2 German teams are facing off.   We first heard of this game when we were staying with Daniela and Emre in Munich.  Now we are in another part of Germany and here they are rooting for Dortmund. the game is on now.   I am going to sleep so will have to wait until morning to hear the results

and to all a good night....
